Sitka, capital of Russian Alaska

In 1741, the Russians arrived in Sitka, Alaska and claimed the land for their country. Sitka was named the capital of Alaksa and became the home of the Russian-American Company until the U.S. bought the enormous landmass in the late 1800s.
Incidentally, most Americans at the time thought Alaska was a waste of money. THAT, however, was before the goldrush.

Sitka's Russian history is still evident in the city's architecture and culture.

The Cathedral of Saint Michael

More amazing Alaskan art.

For the couple who has everything.

Seward was our turn-around port.

My baby in his Alaska hat and gloves I bought him :)
The White Pass and Yukon Railroad stretches 40 miles through rough mountain terrain. It was a busy route among gold rushers travelling from the port of Skagway. You can still take the three hour trip over the route built in 1898.
